Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQ
What is a zine?
A zine is an art book containing illustrations (by lots of different artists) centered around one topic. Our zine will consist of Splatoon characters celebrating the game’s 5 year anniversary.

Is this a physical or digital zine?
This is a physical zine and will be printed professionally and shipped right to your doorstep.
What are the print specs of the zine?
The zine will be an 5.5” wide and 8.5” tall. The book will be perfect bound and will contain 52+ pages (depending on how many artist get accepted). The zine will be shipped in a bubble mailer.
Will there be merch for the zine?
We would like to add merch but this will depend on how the interest check goes. If not many people are interested in merch, this will be a zine only.
Will you be taking moderator applications?
Yes! We would like to have at least 1-3 more mods on the team. Mods will also get the opportunity to be a page artist. The mod duties would mostly include creating promotional images for social media, but we would like help to create character designs for the two mascots of the zine. All mods will get first pick on what topic they would like to illustrate.
What platform will you use to organize the zine?
We will be using discord so contributors are required to have a discord account. If you don’t have an account you can sign up for free. A private link to the server will be sent to all accepted contributors.
What happens of an artist is unable to meet a deadline or become unresponsive?
We understand that life happens so if an artist become unresponsive or too busy to compete their illustration, we will get a backup artist to take your spot.
Where will the money earned from the zine go?
This is a charity zine. A majority of the proceeds will cover production costs. If we make any extra, the money will get donated to The Nature Conservancy.
Artist FAQ
What can I draw for the zine?
The main theme of the zine is celebrating Splatoon’s 5 year anniversary. So how do you think the creatures of inkopolis will celebrate this milestone? A list of topic suggestions are below. You are free to draw your inkling/octoling OCs and or official splatoon characters, though please have only splatoon related creatures in your illustration (meaning no characters from other IPs). Also we want to note that this is a SFW zine. Please do not drawing NSFW art for the zine.
What are the suggested list of topics?
We would like to have a variety of different illustrations in the zine so artists are encouraged to pick a topic below. If an artist has a different topic in mind (which is totally fine), they will just have to run their idea by the mods. Also, since this is a zine celebrating Splatoon’s 5th birthday, artists may also choose to draw inklings/octolings/NPCs of splatoon celebrating together.

What compensation do artists get for participating?
All artists who finish and submit their piece will get a free hardcopy and PDF of the zine.
*Depending on how preorder sales go, artists may have to pay for shipping. However, we have budgeted free shipping for artist’ first copy so if we sell a lot of copies, there will be enough funds leftover to have free shipping for artists.
Can artists buy additional copies of the zine at a discounted rate?
All artists will get 1 free copy of the zine and if an artist would like additional copies, they will be able to purchase additional copies at production cost and will have to pay for additional shipping costs.
How many artists are you accepting for the zine?
Our goal is to have the zine be a minimum of 52 pages so we are looking for at least 45 artists. If we get a lot of applications, we would be more than happy to accept 60+ artists into the zine.
What size is the zine going to be?
The zine will be 5.5” x .8.5” and artists will have to add a .125” bleed around each edge bringing the total size to be 5.625” x 8.625”. A template will be provided in PSD format and PNG format.
How do I make sure my drawing is in CMYK?
Depending on the program, you can set up your document with the right color profile before you create the canvas. For example in photoshop there is an option called “color mode” where you can select CMYK. If you like to draw in RGB, can convert your drawing to CMYK once it’s done (a mod can help you do this) just be aware that changing to CMYK will slightly change the colors.

Can artists post WIPS of their piece?
Yes, artists are allowed to post cropped WIPS as they like as long as they tag the twitter account. We ask that artists not post the full finished illustration until orders have shipped and landed in supporter’s mailboxes.
Can artist sell prints/merch of their piece after the project ends?
Yes, the artist still own the right to their illustration and can do whatever they want with it after the project ends.
